New web-based breath analysers to keep check on drunk drivers in Pune city | Pune News

Pune: The Pune city traffic police have acquired 10 new, web-based breathalyzer machines to crack down on drunk driving cases. These modern devices, which will be operational next week, are designed to improve both monitoring and enforcement. The new machines are internet-connected, allowing senior police officers to supervise enforcement actions from a control room. According to additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil, this connectivity enables officers to take the machines anywhere in the city and carry out actions under real-time supervision. This new technology will allow monitoring of the field officers as they conduct operations against drunk drivers, ensuring that enforcement is both effective and transparent.“The machines are connected to the control room with the internet. If a field officer catches a drunk driver, the machine will read the driver’s alcohol limit. If the test comes out positive, the control room will record it automatically. Following this, the field officer can generate a receipt and initiate further action against the drunk driver. If the test comes out negative, the same will be recorded on the system.” he said. The senior officers will monitor the system regularly and the system will ask the field officers, armed with the breath analysers, to act against the drunk drivers. “If no action is taken by the field officer, the senior officers can seek an explanation as to why the action was not taken,” Patil said. “With this, we can monitor every drunk driving action by the field officer, and with this, it will increase the responsibility of the field officers,” he added.
