Mumbai civic body says it has received three applications for controlled feeding of pigeons

Mumbai: After the Bombay high court told the BMC to seek feedback from the public before deciding whether to allow controlled pigeon feeding, the BMC said it had received three applications, including from the Dadar Kabutar Khana trust for controlled feeding, and sought objections and suggestions from citizens. They have been asked to submit suggestions and objections, on allowing controlled feeding at specific timings to pigeons at areas where they are fed, between August 18 and 29.The Bombay high court Ddivision bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Arif Doctor on August 13 said, “You (BMC) cannot just allow feeding now once you have already taken a closure decision keeping public health in mind. You will have to take a well-considered decision. Once an application is received, you need to issue a notice and invite objections from people and then make a decision. Once you have taken a decision keeping people’s health in mind, you need to maintain that sanctity.“The BMC on Sunday appealed to citizens to request to review the three applications they have received from the Dadar Kabutarkhana Trust Board, Yasmin Bhansali & Company and Pallavi Patil on the BMC website and mail their objections or suggestions to email ID suggestions@mcgm.gov.in. If the objections or suggestions are to be submitted in written form in person, they should be submitted to executive health officer, third floor, F South ward office building, Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg, Parel, during office hours.Pallavi Patil, one of the applicants, had earlier sent a mail appealing to the BMC to permit feeding and watering of every single pigeon at its current natural and habituated location, including but not limited to existing kabutarkhanas, traditional and naturally developed feeding zones where pigeons reside, and residential or public spaces where pigeon colonies already exist, besides, establish water provision facilities for pigeons at their location, among other things.
