Watching Michael, the recently released biographical film directed by Antoine Fuqua, what lingers isn’t just the music or the performance, but a striking awareness of how early everything began for Michael Jackson. By the time most artistes are still discovering themselves, he had already been shaped by years of rehearsals, recordings and constant exposure. The film shows glimpses of this, but looking back, it’s difficult not to think about what it would have meant to grow up under that kind of pressure, and how much of it impacted his later life.
When you talk about Michael Jackson today, one usually jumps straight to the magnitude of what he accomplished. Thriller remains the most vivid example, with an estimated 70 million copies sold worldwide, that numbers don’t fully explain why his work continues to resonate.
