Pune: The Wakad police have arrested a former traffic warden of the Chatushrungi traffic division of the Pune traffic police in connection with chain snatching and vehicle theft.After removing from the traffic warden job about five months ago for his inappropriate behaviour, the accused, Sachin Chavan, 27, of Maan village, started snatching gold chains.Chavan snatched the first gold chain worth Rs 1.50 of a 42-year-old man at Wakad and on April 8 snatched a gold chain worth Rs 1 lakh of a 32-year-old woman at Thergaon. The woman stated in her complaint that the snatcher drove away on a white and purple-coloured scooter. A Wakad police team led by senior police inspector Ashok Kadlag checked several CCTV footages and traced the scooter and the accused at Maan village on April 10. “During the sustained questioning, Chavan admitted to robbing two gold chains and stealing the scooter,” deputy commissioner of police (zone-II) Vishal Gaikwad said.The officer said that in Feb, Chavan used a motorcycle to snatch the gold chain. In March this year, he stole a scooter, detained by the Chatushrungi traffic division, and used it to snatch a gold chain on April 8. “We have detected three cases, including two chain snatching cases with the Wakad police and a vehicle theft registered with the Chatushrungi police. Our investigations are on,” the officer said.
