Pune: Cybercriminals duped a Bhosari-based private engineering company of Rs55.25 lakh using spoofed emails between April 2 and 6 this year. The company’s official on Saturday lodged a complaint with the Bhosari MIDC police. The ‘spoofing’ fraud technique refers to phishing attacks to trick users into thinking an email came from a person or an entity they either know or can trust. The firm that fell victim to this con mainly produces valves and imports raw materials from a China-based company. According to the complainant, on April 2, they received an email which they thought was from the Chinese company, demanding $59,000 for materials they supplied.“The email address was similar to the company’s original email address. There was a mention of a bank account of a private bank in Washington DC, in the United States of America. The company was requested to transfer the amount to that bank account,” an officer of the Bhosari MIDC police said.He said that the company official did not suspect anything and transferred Rs55.25 lakh to the given bank account. “The complainant realised that it was a fraudulent email when he contacted the China-based company’s official. He then approached the police and lodged a complaint,” he said.
