Pune: A pedestrian was killed after a speeding car crashed into a roadside nira stall and then mowed him down on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass near High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Bavdhan on Saturday.The stallowner and the car driver suffered injuries in the accident. The Bavdhan police identified the deceased as Zahiruddin Kamaluddin Khan (29) of Kondhwa. He hailed from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh. “Khan was an air conditioner mechanic,” police sub-inspector Sarang Thakare of the Bavdhan police said.The officer said Maya Bhandari, who was selling nira at her stall, suffered injuries to her legs. The car driver (40) is a software engineer from Bavdhan, who suffered head injuries. “He is undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital,” the officer said.He said the accident happened around 3pm on Saturday. The Nira stall is located at a spot where the service road connects the Dehu Road corridor of the bypass near HEMRL. “The techie was speeding on the service road. He lost control of the wheel. Instead of turning towards the bypass, he went straight towards the nira stall and crashed into it,” he said.The officer said the speed was such that the stall toppled. The car then hit Khan, who was standing a few metres away from the stall and went off the road. “Khan died on the spot. Bhandari suffered a few injuries on her legs as she was inside the stall,” the officer said.He said the techie has been booked under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, he said.
