Cybercrooks threaten to snap PNG connection, dupe man of 9L

Pune: Cybercrooks threaten to snap piped gas connection for non-payment of PNG bill and duped a Kothrud-resident (62) of Rs 8.91 lakh on Nov 13 last year.The victim, who has been running an electrical gadgets manufacturing unit, filed a complaint with the Pune cybercrime police. After the preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Kothrud police on Thursday.An officer from the Kothrud police said on Nov 13 last year, the complainant received a call from an unknown cellphone number. The caller told him that the latter did not pay the bill for May. He told him to pay the bill immediately or else his gas connection would be disconnected.“The accused sent him a link and told him to pay Rs 8 through it to initiate the payment process,” the officer said.He said the victim downloaded the link and tried to transfer Rs 8. The transactions, however, failed. “The next day, on Nov 14, when the victim was at Mahabaleshwar, he tried to make a hotel payment from his debit card. He could not pay it as there was no balance in his bank account. His accountant told him that Rs 8.91 lakh was transferred through five transactions on Nov 13,” he said.The officer said the victim then found out that he was duped by the cybercrooks and approached the police, the officer said.
