Firing bid fails in Ganj Peth rival gang clash, 6 arrested

Pune: An old dispute between two groups in Ganj Peth turned violent in the early hours of Wednesday at Ganj Peth, when an accused from one of the groups tried to shoot one person from the opponent gang twice. The victim (22) of Ganj Peth sustained head injuries in the attack. He has lodged a complaint with the Khadak police.The police have registered the case under sections 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 189, 190, 191 (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A police team led by senior police inspector Shashikant Chavan arrested six accused. “The main accused, who tried to open fire, is on the run,” an officer from the Khadak police told TOI.The officer said that in the early hours of Wednesday, the victim and his friends were putting up banners in their area for a programme to be organised in the next month. The complainant had heated arguments over a trivial issue with members of the opposite group, who had come there. The duo left the spot and returned with six more accomplices. “One of them attempted to shoot the victim twice. But, the bullet did not fire from the weapon. He then assaulted the victim with the grip of the firearm. His accomplices thrashed three others with the belts,” the officer said.He said that before leaving the spot, the accused hurled bottles and stones towards the victims. “In the melee, the magazine of the firearm fell at the spot. The accused reached there after some time and drove away with the magazine,” he said.The officer said that the accused, who tried to open fire, is a criminal on the police records. “We have fanned teams to arrest him,” the officer said.
