Pune: A 37-year-old woman lost her left leg after a dumper truck hit her scooter from the rear in Tathawade around 2pm on Monday. The woman — Swara Sanjay Pawar, who is a staff head at a local gym — lost her balance and fell, with her left leg going under the truck’s front wheel.“The driver of the dumper truck fled the scene, leaving her trapped under the vehicle. Rescuers, including local residents, used an earth mover to lift the truck. The rescue efforts took around 30 minutes. By that time her leg was severely damaged due to significant blood loss,” sub-inspector Ashok Dudhawane from Hinjewadi police station said. “We later traced and arrested the driver. We have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” he added. The driver of the truck has claimed that the accident occurred after the woman’s scooter suddenly came in front of his vehicle. “We let him go after issuing a notice, asking him to join our investigation as and when summoned by the investigating officer,” Dudhawane said. Giving an update about his wife’s health condition, Sanjay Pawar, an electrical contractor, said, “Her leg was amputated after a major surgery. To save her life, we had no other choice but to go for the amputation.”He said, “The accident occurred in front of our building when my wife was returning home from work. I was working at a site in Hinjewadi when I was informed about the accident. I went directly to the hospital, where she was admitted. The doctors told me that her entire left leg needed to be removed. There is no chance of fixing an artificial limb to her.”Pawar said he later came to know about the terrifying situation faced by his wife. “The driver just fled after the accident and did not bother to move the heavy vehicle. My wife’s left leg was under the wheel for around 30 minutes. The local residents came to her rescue. Police should take stringent action against the negligent driver,” he said.
