Navi Mumbai: BJP’s three-time corporator, Ashok Patil, was elected unopposed as the chairman of the Standing Committee of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Thursday. The Committee chairmanship is considered a key post in the elected civic body, as the person handles the NMMC treasury.Patil was the health committee chairman in his earlier stint as a corporator. He won the Jan 15 election from ward number 5 of Airoli. Patil worked closely under two-time Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik. Shiv Sena did not put up its candidate for the top post since it had six members in the committee, whereas BJP had 10 members. Patil will play an important role in the financial decisions of NMMC. “Priority will be given to development works. Care will be taken to ensure that every rupee of the citizens’ money is spent in the right way,” said Patil.
