New Delhi: A Delhi court has convicted a man in a 2018 attempt-to-murder case, observing that the prosecution had proved the charges against him “beyond reasonable doubt.” Additional sessions judge Dhirendra Rana, in an order dated Oct 28, held that the nature of injuries suffered by the victim was “dangerous to life” and had been inflicted on vital parts of the body. The court said the accused, Mohammad Saleem, stabbed the victim multiple times with a sharp-edged weapon, clearly showing his intention was to “commit murder and not merely cause superficial injuries.” Saleem was accused of attacking one Jaggi on Nov 25, 2018, near Dabri Extension while the latter was returning home from work. According to the prosecution, Saleem first struck the victim with a brick and then stabbed him repeatedly. Observing that the chest is a vital part of the body and the intention of the accused was clear, the judge said that Saleem attacked the complainant with the intention to commit murder. “Besides stabbing the victim, the accused also struck his head with a brick, fully aware that the blow could prove fatal,” the order stated.Saleem was charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after pleading not guilty, and later under Section 174A (non-appearance in response to a court proclamation) when he failed to surrender following the expiry of his interim bail. The court has listed the matter for arguments on the quantum of sentence at a later date.
