New Delhi: Ten Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in outer Delhi for allegedly overstaying in India with expired passports and visas while attempting to procure medical visas for Bulgaria, police said on Friday. The action was carried out by the Foreigner Cell of the Outer district as part of an ongoing drive to identify foreign nationals residing illegally in the city. Police said the team had been conducting verification exercises and gathering intelligence to trace individuals staying without valid documents.“Information was received about a group of foreign nationals, suspected to be from Bangladesh, who had continued to stay in India even after their visas expired. Inputs also suggested that they were trying to arrange medical visas for going to Bulgaria,” DCP (Outer) Vikram Singh said. On March 6, cops received information that the suspects would be present near Peeragarhi Chowk, close to a DDA park. Police reached the spot and kept the area under surveillance. When the suspects noticed the cops, they allegedly tried to flee but were intercepted.During verification, the individuals were identified as Faruk (39), Mohammad Sojib Fakir (29), Shohag Mia (26), Shehabuddin (36), Mohammad Sharajul Islam Shahidul (37), Golam Rabbani (29), Sajib Mia (26), Mohammad Jahirul Chowdhury (33), Mohammad Alamgir Hossin (30) and Mohammad Abdul Kuddus (38). Police said none of them could produce valid identity or travel documents during questioning. Further checks revealed that their passports and visas had expired. All 10 were taken into custody and deportation proceedings were initiated in coordination with Foreigner Regional Registration Office.
